The Chadar Trek is a sensitive ecosystem. It is one of the most popular treks and thus attracts a considerable crowd. Dry toilets are erected by the Ladakh administration at the campsites. They are made of metal and fiber and are quite sturdy. They also have secure doors. One can find these at Shingra Koma, Tibb caves, and Nerak.
Secondly, you may notice that generally, trek operators set up vertical tents for the purpose of the toilet. These tents are tiny and rectangular (3x3 feet). Inside the tent, the operators dig up a hole of around 10 inches. On both sides of the breach, they keep two rocks for people to keep their feet. After using it, one can put some sand on it, making it possible for others to use it.
At a reasonable distance from the campsites at Shingra Koma and Nerak, you may find loose mud. Cat holes can be dug up in these areas. They are similar to the gaps mentioned above. Once you are done using them, you can cover it up with wet mud. This practice is eco-friendly as the soil decomposes the waste.
