The mountain fragrance is continually tempting the weather-stricken explorers. The most famous adventure sport in the army is mountaineering. The Indian Army mountaineers have blazed a trail of colorful achievements after the first Mt Everest (8.848 m) successful climb in 2001 under Brig Kumar, AVSM. In 2002, both Everest & Lhotse (85,166 m) in 2003, Kanchenjunga (85,586 m) in 2004, an exclusive Army Women Everest Expedition in 2005, Mt Cho Oyu in 2006, Dhaulagiri in 2009, Manaslu in 2010 and several other peaks in India were summited by mountain climbers from Annapurna I (8,091 m).
At the Army Mountain Institute in Siachen Base Camp, the Basic & Advanced Classes are held. Two institutions operate directly under the auspices of the MDA and offer a vacancy of armies at the Basic and Advanced Courses, each year, to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) Uttarkashi and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI).
